Migraines come, sometimes without warning, and can completely wreck your day or any plans that you had. We are here, always ready and waiting to help you overcome these surprises. Sometimes there could be sights or smells that trigger migraines as well, in this case it’s important to know what those may be, so that you can prevent or mitigate the issue.

What is a migraine headache?

Headaches are a common complaint in the office. There are over 150 types of headaches with subdivisions of primary and secondary headaches. Primary headaches, like migraine headaches, are clinically diagnosed on their own without any testing. These headaches could be pounding or throbbing in nature. They could also be dull and shift from one side of your head to the other.  Pain could travel down to the neck and upper cervical vertebrae as well. Pain could also be reported in the jaw and eye. Chiropractors are trained to be able to discern between different types of headaches to determine the best course of treatment for you. If you’ve ever had a migraine headache, you are very aware of just how debilitating they can be.  Treatment is a necessity for a faster recovery.

What can chiropractic do to help?

Many medications prescribed to treat migraines come with many side effects, as is the case with most medications these days. Patients often seek alternative care for migraines and chiropractic is one of those options. Symptoms associated with mild migraines mimic those that patients seek out chiropractic care for, neck pain being the main one. Treatment includes adjustments and various soft tissue techniques like massage and trigger point work to loosen up the muscles that are aggravated when experiencing a migraine. Nutrition also plays a role in the prevention and treatment of the symptoms. Many times addressing a deficiency in B complex vitamins with Standard Process supplements will help reduce these headaches.  Exercise can also be beneficial due to increased blood flow. Adjustments will help move the joint segments where inflammation and aggravation from the migraine may appear. As always, adjustments are great for overall health and increase neural flow and communication from the brain to the rest of the body. So if the migraine is a condition of the brain and head, then it makes sense to treat the problem at the root of the cause, and decrease the amount of irritation to that chain.

When should you come in for care?

People experiencing any of these symptoms should consult our office or a local chiropractor for more information. As chiropractors, we specialize in cervical adjustments, or neck adjustments, and are well equipped to help with your headaches. If you frequently get migraines, but aren’t currently symptomatic, please call to make an appointment to see what chiropractic can do to help keep your headaches away. As always, chiropractic is great because we are not putting anything into the body that may have side effects. Instead, we are adjusting the body to allow for natural connections to be made and repaired so that the body can operate at an optimal level.
