A child’s body goes through more trauma and stress than you might realize. Spinal alignment can be altered during the birthing process, falling off of a bike, or many of the other things kids do. Chiropractic care is a safe and valuable solution for restoring proper joint function and limiting the long-term effects of injuries.

Chiropractic For Kids

I often get asked whether it is safe for children to get adjusted. The answer to that question is a definite yes. Kids are typically born with joint dysfunction and misalignment in their spines. If we think about the positions they are in, and the process of delivery, we can only imagine the tremendous amount of stress and force applied to the baby’s spine. The average amount of pressure on a baby’s neck during delivery is 80lb! After this amount of force is applied, there are bound to be joint dysfunctions in the spine.

What are the Signs that My Child Might Need an Adjustment

It can be difficult for children to express to their parents that they are having pain or discomfort, so an evaluation by a chiropractor is vital. As a child grows, there may be indications of spinal problems and it’s important to note that chiropractic can help with earaches, colic, and bed wetting. It’s important to ensure that the nervous and musculoskeletal systems are working properly and optimally. Chiropractic care promotes healthy living and proper nervous system function throughout a child’s body, just as it does for adults.

Primarily, energy levels and activity levels will be an indicator to you that your child needs treatment by a chiropractor. I have always told parents that if their child seems to be low on energy or unable to move or climb objects properly as they grow, it’s time to get their spinal alignment checked.

What is an Adjustment Like for a Tiny Human

Adjustments performed on babies and children vary between different chiropractors. At our office we use light pressure adjustments and the Activator adjusting instrument to adjust small children. These methods are not as aggressive as the traditional manual adjustments generally performed on healthy adults, but they provide the same results.

When to Make an Appointment

Most of the time, your child will show signs of discomfort through their actions, and eventually through their words or expressions. Prior to being able to verbalize that they are having pain, kids will have decreased energy or will have trouble doing certain tasks that they were always able to do before. Kids may also have a lack of appetite or be a little gassy. These are the usual signs that your child may need medical care, including chiropractic adjustments. The best thing about chiropractic care is that it’s natural and safe. With chiropractic, we can re-establish the vital communication between the brain and the body, with the goal of avoiding invasive treatments for your child.
